The milk production in the country has increased from 155.49 Million Tonnes in 2015-16 to 176.34 Million tonnes in 2017-18. Similarly, the Egg production has increased from 82928.44 million Nos in 2015-16 to 95217.00 Million Nos in 2017-18. The poultry meat production has also increased from 3.264 million tonnes in 2015-6 to 3.767 million tonnes in 2017-18.
The Department is implementing following dairy development schemes aiming at creation and strengthening/modernization of dairy infrastructure for production of quality milk, procurement, processing and, marketing of milk and milk products to support increase in income of farmers in the country:
- National Programme for Dairy Development
- National Dairy Plan – I
- Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme
- Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund Scheme
5.Supporting Dairy Cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organizations engaged in dairy Activities.
Further, in the dairy sector for promotion of milk and milk products in the coming years, research activities have been initiated by Indian Council of Agricultural Research for Genetic improvement of milch animals, Development of state-of-the-art dairy production systems, Raising productivity of dairy animals through improved feeding strategies etc. Besides, outreach programmes such as ‘Farmers’ Farm School’ and ‘Education at Farmers’ Door’ are being carried out regularly to disseminate knowledge to farmers in order to encourage them to follow scientific dairy farming practices. Further, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research through various research efforts has developed and released certain new backyard poultry varieties having double the egg production as compared to local / native variety.
