India in the last five years has been characterized with an array of innovative health sector reforms and interventions in all dimensions of public health management, viz. “health promotion”, “disease prevention” and “healthcare delivery”.  In spite of the few successes that India has had in the health space including completing one year of being a polio free nation, the country as a whole lies way behind many of the health-related indices of the Millennium Development Goals.

Challenges of ongoing communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, the four main non-communicable diseases (diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory diseases) continue in the developing world have emerged relatively unnoticed and is now becoming a global epidemic and adding on to the triple burden of diseases. However, such diseases could be significantly reduced and prevented, with millions of lives saved and untold suffering avoided, through proven and affordable measures, many of which are complementary to global health efforts already under way.

There is an urgent need to redefine public healthcare and refocus on revolutionizing the health care delivery for the emerging world. The Summit is envisaged to serve as a strong multistakeholder platform for India and other emerging countries for sharing the experiences, concerns and identify action points for future course of action. It is the time for ‘setting agenda for the change’ to steer the emerging countries steadily towards the health for all goal and develop an equitable and self -sustainable health system.
